Bindarri National Park
Bindarri National Park in Dairyville, 20km west of Coffs Harbour, was declared in 1999 for its stunning natural, cultural and recreational values. It protects the escarpment between the Dorrigo Plateau and the Coffs Coast and links with other parks, state forest and private land to form a significant wildlife link from the mountains to the sea.
Several streams cut deep gorges in the park creating a dramatic landscape. One of those streams is the Urumbilum River, which flows past the recently opened Bindarray picnic area. This is a great place to enjoy a picnic and take a swim in the crystal-clear river.
Local Gumbalar Julipi Elders identified the name for both the national park and the picnic area, Bindarray being a Gumbaynggir word meaning ‘many creeks’.
The headwaters of the Urumbilum River offer spectacular waterfalls in a remote and rugged setting. Pockets of old-growth forest are scattered across the plateau and rainforest protects the steeper slopes. The park contains a host of rare species, including the Giant Barred Frog.
A short walk from the Bangalore picnic area through the rainforest will bring you to the beautiful Bangalore Falls. Keen walkers can walk to Tuckers Knob or explore the more remote waterfalls on the Urumbilum River.
The park is ideal for visitors with 4WD vehicles who seek a forest experience on the doorstep of a major regional centre. All vehicle access within the park is on rough, dry-weather-only 4WD roads.
Things to see and do
- Bushwalking: Walk through pristine old-growth forests to discover a cascade of waterfalls as the Urumbilum River plunges down from the Great Dividing Range into a palm-filled valley.
- Climbing: Take the challenging climb to Tuckers Nob, overlooking the steep, dense rainforests above Tallowood Point.
- Waterfalls: Experienced can make their way downstream Urumbilum River to Try Again, Last Effort and Mirrong Falls.
- 4WD exploring: In dry weather, explore the northern regions of the park by 4WD on rough roads.
- Lookout point: Drive to the lookout point at the junction of Jersey Bull Road, Pine Road and Range Road for wide, spectacular views of the Orara Valley to Coffs Harbour and Muttonbird Island.
- Wildlife spotting: Listen for the calls of forest and mountain birds - take an evening stroll with a torch to observe native fauna - quolls, possums, owls and wallabies.
Getting There
Bindarri National Park is 20 km west of Coffs Harbour. Access is via unpaved, dry-weather only roads – either via Corfes Road from near Ulong, or via Upper Orara and Pine Road through Dairyville. There is 4WD access only on Pine, Langleys and Urumbilum Roads.
